Course Overview

Construction environments present a wide range of hazards, from slips, trips and falls to moving plant, hazardous substances, noise, vibration and work at height. Without a good understanding of these risks, workers are more likely to be involved in accidents or develop work-related ill health.

This course introduces the basic health and safety principles required to work safely in construction. Learners gain an understanding of their responsibilities, common site hazards and the importance of following safe working practices. By improving awareness and promoting a positive safety mindset, CITB HSA training helps reduce accidents, improve compliance and create safer working environments across the construction industry.

• Understand the basic principles of health and safety within a construction environment.
• State the legal responsibilities of employers and employees for health and safety at work.
• Recognise the importance of accident reporting, recording and maintaining a safe place of work.
• Identify common causes of work-related ill health and understand how to reduce these risks.
• Understand first aid and emergency procedures and know their role within them.
• Identify the purpose of personal protective equipment and understand the basic rules for its use.
• Recognise the risks associated with asbestos and understand how it should be managed on site.
• Understand the dangers of respiratory hazards and how they can be controlled.
• Recognise the health risks associated with excessive noise and vibration.
• Understand the risks posed by hazardous substances and the importance of control measures.
• Identify common site hazards such as slips, trips, falls, manual handling, working at height and plant movements.
• Recognise the importance of safe working practices, site rules and following instructions.
• Contribute to creating a safer construction site by applying basic health and safety knowledge in day-to-day work.
