Course Overview

This course teaches learners how to assess a situation safely, provide basic life support, use an AED, manage bleeding, burns, choking, seizures, shock, and other common workplace incidents.


Having trained first aiders helps protect employees, visitors, and contractors while supporting employers in meeting their legal health and safety responsibilities. It also helps create a safer workplace where staff feel prepared to act calmly and effectively when help is needed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider.
  • Recognise the legal and ethical considerations linked to providing first aid.
  • Assess an emergency situation safely using the principles of DRCABCDE.
  • Carry out a primary survey to identify life-threatening conditions.
  • Carry out a secondary assessment to identify injuries, signs, and symptoms.
  • Place an unresponsive breathing casualty into the recovery position.
  • Provide basic life support, including effective CPR.
  • Use an automated external defibrillator (AED) safely and effectively.
  • Recognise and manage choking, asthma, anaphylaxis, and other breathing emergencies.
  • Recognise and manage shock, bleeding, fainting, and other circulatory conditions.
  • Treat wounds, burns, scalds, foreign objects, and minor injuries.
  • Recognise and respond to seizures and other common medical emergencies.
  • Understand how to communicate with casualties, bystanders, and emergency services.
  • Understand infection control, accident reporting, and the correct use of first aid equipment.

This course is suitable for anyone who has been nominated as a workplace first aider or who may need to provide emergency first aid at work.

FAQ's

Yes. Learners are expected to take part in practical activities, including CPR practice and placing a casualty into the recovery position. This means learners will need to be able to get down to the floor and back up again safely.

Yes. Learners will be taught how to carry out CPR and understand when it should be used.

The Emergency First Aid at Work qualification is valid for three years. But it is recommended to carry out an annual refresher 

The number of first aiders needed depends on your workplace first aid needs assessment. This should consider the size of the workforce, workplace hazards, accident history, shift patterns, lone workers, visitors, contractors, and how quickly first aid support may be needed.

EFAW is often suitable for lower-risk workplaces where the first aid needs assessment shows that emergency first aid cover is appropriate.

EFAW stands for Emergency First Aid at Work and is normally a one-day course covering emergency first aid skills. FAW stands for First Aid at Work and is normally a longer, more detailed course for higher-risk workplaces or workplaces with more complex first aid needs. FAW may be more suitable for higher-risk workplaces, larger workplaces, or environments where injuries and illnesses may require a broader level of first aid knowledge.
